Frequently Asked Questions

An internal examination includes examination of the pelvic floor musculature and local organs and tissues either by a vaginal or rectal approach. This provides information to rule in or out pelvic floor dysfunction and helps provide the best treatment plan possible.
-
Absolutely! An internal exam is recommended because it gives us the most information about what is happening, but it is not required. It is always your choice to decline, and we can stop at any point during the exam should you accept and then change your mind. I will walk you through exactly what we are doing and why, and if you decide to decline the exam we will continue your evaluation using the other information and assessment methods available to us.
-
Nope, no need to reschedule. Being on your period can actually provide useful information in some cases. If you’d rather skip internal work that session, that’s completely fine. We can shift to external techniques and adjust the session around what feels best for you.

No, Haven PT and Pelvic Health is an out of network provider and does not accept insurance. All fees are discussed upfront and payment is due at the time of service. I can provide a detailed invoice (a Superbill) that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement depending on your insurance plan.

One clinician that has devoted her professional career to this specialty . Private office. You get to choose the provider. You are not assigned. Whole body multi system approach.
-
This cannot be answered definitively as there are too many variables. Anything else is a guess.

Pelvic floor therapy is so much more than kegels. Before we do anything else, we want to determine if Kegels would even be indicated for your specific type of pelvic floor dysfunction. If the answer is yes, we would assess if you have been doing them correctly. More often than not, treating pelvic floor dysfunction requires more than strengthening the pelvic floor, which is why Kegels alone often don’t resolve symptoms. Long-term resolution of symptoms requires an approach that identifies what systems are affecting the pelvic floor, and corrects the function outside the pelvis.
-
Yes. I (Marny), am the sole provider at Haven PT and Pelvic Health and will be holding your hand and guiding your care from your initial phone call to our final session and return to all the activities you love.
-
Your first session is a 2-hour visit that includes discussion, examination, and the start of treatment. We will review your digital forms that you filled out and what brought you to Haven to begin with. The physical examination will look at multiple systems of the body and may include an internal pelvic floor examination with your consent. We will begin to treat what we find that correlates with your symptoms and the working theory of what is causing your symptoms. There will be constant communication and comprehensive education about what the working theory is and why the specific plan of care was chosen. Knowledge is power.
-
Bring or wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in. A loose fitting top and shorts or stretchy pants with an elastic waist are ideal.
-
Please fill out all of your digital forms sent through my EMR 48 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. This allows plenty of time to review them and prepare ahead of time and not use your visit time for me to read them. There will be locations to provide medications, imaging results, and other data collection information.

Initial sessions are two-hours long and follow-up visits are 90 minutes long.

Without seeing you first and understanding your specific situation it is impossible to know exactly how many sessions you will need. After your first session I will have a better idea and will fully communicate the proposed plan of care.
Many patients find it helpful to understand the entire treatment arc, so they can get the full picture of how the sessions will progress over time and get them their desired outcome.
Your PT plan of care is usually broken down into phases of treatment.
Phase 1 is “figuring it out.” Determining the cause of symptom drivers can take up to 3-5 sessions. We are working together weekly with test-treat-retest and starting treatment for symptom control.
Phase 2 is “fix the things”. This is where we treat what we find that is the working theory of what is causing the dysfunction. This is a weekly process so we can gain traction and forward momentum on healing. There is a strong manual approach, education, and some home instruction. This can be several weeks or months depending on the longevity and severity of your diagnosis.
Phase 3 is “finding long term relief”. This is still weekly sessions transitioning to every other week. There is a stronger focus on progressive functional corrective exercises, independent pain management skills.. There will be a lower focus on manual therapies.
Phase 4 is “Phasing out”. Minimal to no symptom breakthrough. This is maintenance care that is intermittent, usually monthly. Sometimes patients decide to keep up with these sessions as check ins, intermittent manual therapies, exercise progressions. You get to decide what this looks like.

You do not need a referral to be seen at Haven. We welcome one should you have one, and would be glad to share our findings with your referring provider.

Yes. It is not uncommon for moms to bring their infants. Crawling babies, toddlers on the move, and young children may be distracting for you, and I would encourage trying to find a sitter. I want this experience to be what is most calming and therapeutic for you with minimal distractions.
-
A partner, friend, or chaperone is always welcome to the first session and beyond. I want you to do what makes you most comfortable.

We require 24 hours notice (although prefer longer) for cancelling your scheduled appointment. There is a cancellation fee of 50% the cost of the scheduled service. There is a charge of 100% the cost of that service if you do not show for your scheduled appointment.
